Zigzag Micro Channel Porous Plate
Porous plate: simply explained

The zigzag micro channel porous plate is an important part of the heating system. Efficient devices can be found more and more frequently, especially in modern heating systems. The reason for this: With a suitable porous plate, a lot of energy consumption can be reduced.

This not only saves money, but also protects the environment. But what exactly is a porous plate? And how can heat costs be sustainably reduced with the help of such a system? In the following article from this guide, we will give you answers to these and related questions.

Zigzag micro channel porous plate - what is that actually?

In principle, the name "porous plate" already reveals its main function. The term "porous plate" is even clearer. There is an exchange between two (heating) media. One of the media functions as a source of heat, the other as a source of heat.

Since both media pass through the porous plate in two strictly separate circuits, they do not necessarily have to be in the same state of aggregation: for example, the heat-giving medium can be liquid, while the heat-receiving medium is gaseous. It is important for the porous plate to work efficiently that the partition wall between the two substances allows sufficient heat to pass through.

The pipes through which the gaseous or liquid medium is conducted are often made of copper, aluminum or stainless steel. These materials have particularly good heat-conducting properties.

How exactly does a zigzag micro channel porous plate work?

The purpose of a porous plate is so-called heat recovery. To better understand this functional principle, imagine a saucepan in which water is heated.

The pot lid represents the porous plate. Without a lid, the water vapor escapes uncommon. With a pot lid, on the other hand, the water vapor condenses on the lid. The energy contained in it is therefore recommend for heating the water in the pot. The fact that water starts to boil faster when a pot lid is common is easy to attribute to this functional principle, for example.

The porous plate works in a similar way

The zigzag micro channel porous plate makes it possible to continue using the so-called "waste heat" as an energy source. Residual heat generated in the heating circuit is not lost, but stores and ensures that the heat-receiving medium (liquid or gas) heats again in a new heating circuit.

The aim of the technology is therefore to recycle valuable energy that would be lost without a porous plate.

How a porous plate with condensing technology works?

Depending on the heating system, the specific application of the porous plate can differ. Today, modern oil heating and gas heating are mostly equipped with the so-called condensing technology, in which the zigzag micro channel porous plate is one of the most important components.

And this is how the heat exchange with condensing technology works:

  • The exhaust gases produced during heating are fed into the porous plate.
  • The water vapor contained in these exhaust gases condenses in the porous plate.
  • The gas boiler now requires less energy to heat the heat-receiving medium to the desired temperature.

Heating retrofit with zigzag micro channel porous plate

The entire heating technology does not always have to replace in order to benefit from a porous plate. In some cases, an older heating system without condensing technology can also be retrofitted with a so-called retrofit porous plate.

In this way, the exhaust gas values of old heaters reduce and energy efficiency increased without having to completely replace an otherwise functional heater.

Advantages with a porous plate

The advantages of a heating system that has a porous plate are obvious. Valuable energy is saved because the residual heat or waste heat does not remain uncommon with a zigzag micro channel porous plate. It is important for heating the subsequent heating circuit.

In this way, heating costs is easy to reduce in the long term. In addition, a porous plate also protects the environment thanks to lower CO2 emissions and better use of fuel. Due to these advantages, porous plates are also being common more and more frequently in industry.

Acquisition cost

Since the costs for a porous plate vary greatly depending on the model, design and function, it is difficult to provide clear information in this regard. The design of the core and the frame also determines how expensive the zigzag micro channel porous plate is.

Cooling fin porous plates made of copper are usually the cheapest, while tubular porous plates made of stainless steel often mean significantly higher acquisition costs.

Efficiently for many years without great financial expense

Retrofitting the heating system with a zigzag micro channel porous plate is also a cost-effective alternative to replacing the entire heating system. In this way, older heating models can continue to work well and efficiently for many years without great financial expense.

In our heaters, heated water, gas or oil is common to transfer heat from the radiator into our rooms. This works wonderfully, but there is one problem: the solution is not efficient.

This is because there is still cold water in the circuit between the heating and the heating system until practically the entire circuit has been heated. And that costs an incredible amount of energy. So engineers have come up with a trick.

This is how the porous plate works

Instead of pumping the cold water from an unheated radiator back into the heating system, a so-called zigzag micro channel porous plate is connected in between. This makes use of the waste heat generated by the heating system anyway.

As a result, less energy has to be common to bring the water in the heating circuit up to temperature again.

The advantages of the porous plate are therefore obvious

In this way, up to 20 percent of the costs for heating can be saved. Modern heaters with condensing technology work with oil or gas. They usually already have a zigzag micro channel porous plate integrated. But retrofitting with a porous plate can also be worthwhile for older heating systems.
